The IRBA’s primary focus is to build a trustworthy and ethical financial sector that will attract investment, boost confidence in the markets and promote responsible business practices.

This is done by:

  • Developing and maintaining auditing and ethics standards that are internationally comparable.
  • Providing an appropriate framework for the education and training of properly qualified auditors and their ongoing competence.
  • Accrediting professional accountancy bodies whose competency frameworks meet the requirements for the registration of their members on the Audit Development Programme.
  • Registering auditors who meet the registration requirements.
  • Monitoring registered auditors’ compliance with professional standards.
  • Investigating and taking appropriate action against registered auditors in respect of improper conduct.
  • Developing and maintaining stakeholder relationships, to enhance performance, accountability and public confidence.
  • Creating and enhancing regulatory tools and principles, to empower registered auditors to carry out their duties competently, independently and in good faith.
